Cleveland has often been the voice of controversy when speaking about animal issues on the air, particularly issues which involve the inhumane treatment of both domestic and wild animals. For example, Wheeler took to task, the taxpayer-funded Hillsborough County Animal Control for selling impounded cats and dogs to the University of South Florida for research purposes.
Wheeler has also organized Earthbound projects to raise money to save Florida's endangered Manatees and indigenous Panther.
"Since 1978, I have raised five generations of Weimaraners: Dancer, Moon-dog of the Brave Hounds, was the first lady. She gave birth to nine beautiful babies. Baron of the Bright Smiles was the sire. From Cupid, son of Dancer, came Moose--pure love in a dog suit. A little over two years ago, I rescued Kelley, a one-year old from three broken homes. In the summer of 1997, I saved Klay from his abandonment on the streets of Jacksonville. Xena became one of the family (1998) as the result of her orphanage to the SPCA.
In 1995, I lost my oldest dog and closest friend, Cupid. A vet overdosed him during a routine teeth cleaning. A little more than a year after that, increasingly saddened by the death of his father and long-time companion, Moose, prematurely aged, lost his ability to walk and live comfortably...but he never lost his will to give. He lives with them all - in DOGHEAVEN."
This site is dedicated to all the great dogs and great memories.
