Everyday is "Be Kind to Pets Day" at my house, but we have to set a week aside to remind ourselves that they depend on us. It sounds like a surprise party is in order for the pack! May 7-13 is BE KIND TO ANIMALS WEEK. This special week promotes kindness and humane care to all animals. This same week is nationally observed as NATIONAL PET WEEK, to promote awareness of veterinary medical service and pet health care education for owners. On of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have is taking your dog to work.Most employers are now bending the rules to allow for TAKE YOUR PET TO WORK WEEK, observed June 18th to the 21st. Watch stress levels drop when your dog shares the work day with you! June 25 to July 1 is HELP ANIMALS WEEK. This means the sick ones and the homeless ones and the one you left in the back yard all day without fresh, cool water. Want to really help? Just about all major dog or animal observance days are in the fall. One of the most recognized weeks of awareness is National Dog Week, from September 19th through the 26th. This week is sponsored by theAmerican Kennel Club and promoted by shelters all over the country toincrease awareness of the number of homeless animals waiting for adoption.National Dog Week is dedicated to the enormous impact that dogs have onour lives as healing, loving companions. THE FIRST SUNDAY IN OCTOBER is observed by the Catholic and Episcopal Churches as, "The Blessing Of The Animals." The ceremonies feature a procession of animals of all kinds, followed by hymns, prayers and a special sermon. The celebration that follows often involves craft sales, arts, dance, petting zoos, and exhibitions on themes of nature. The public is invited to the morning service of that day to bring their pets for blessing by the priests. One of the finest examples of this special day can be experienced at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan. As St. Francis believed, "God gives special grace to those who love their little brothers and sisters, the birds and the beasts!"
